Is there still life where there’s not use?

Room 1 contained a video installation with an interrupting sound piece played in the room. The video and sounds were from visits to several Portland area thrift stores to excavate electromagnetic sounds from objects in the electronics section.

After the video and sound piece, visitors could continue to Room 2 where a table was set up with 5 objects, a sound mixer, a synthesizer, speakers, and a set of instructions. The objects were paired with electromagnetic contact mics and at each edge of the table were a set of instructions. Visitors could interact with the objects and microphones.

The electromagnetic microphones picked up electromagnetic waves in the objects. These sounds could be heard from the speakers as visitors tested them out. The participants took the project into their own hands, trying things I had not thought of, including using the mics on their iPhones.
