About the work.
I gave myself prompts of different ways to enact the late 90s, early 2000s choreography of two major and influential boy bands - NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. One prompt was a direct mimic of the choreography, which meant trying to learn the moves and attitude of delivery. Another was to interpret the moves - the feeling, the music, the lyrics as my 32-year-old body today in 2019. One rule for myself was to TRY to be fully “in it”. To stay with the material (the music) until I felt the way I might have felt when I was 10 - 13 years old, or something akin to that. I wanted to consciously let the music affect me. Sometimes I got there (felt moved in a way I could recall) and sometimes I did not, and I let the gestures evolve into a feeling or interpretation of that moment. I also styled my hair and dress like an amalgamation of 90s-2000 boybands. I do this to try and heighten my embodiment of both the boy-band-ers & my 10-13 year old self. There are also portions of the “practice” where I wear more typical contemporary movement clothes.
I also included a book/pamphlet. I think about amateur YouTubers and early internet practices (2000-2010) of having an emailer list. Personal accounts sending monthly emails to their personal list. I also thought about workout tutorials that use still images, yoga posters especially from the 70s-90s, and Martha Graham’s “Self-Practice” book.
